“Make America Great Again” (MAGA) is a phrase that has ricocheted through American politics in recent years like a pinball in a noisy arcade.

It’s the kind of slogan that inspires fireworks displays, passionate debates, and eye-rolling that could power a small generator. But for some, the message isn’t a triumphant call to relive America’s glory days; instead, it’s a reminder that America was never all that great to begin with.

Now, Trump is planning another presidential run (Perhaps to escape his mounting legal troubles) and the MAGA faithful are proudly donning their red hats again.

In this article, we will explore why America was never great for many citizens, shedding light on the skepticism surrounding the MAGA message.

The Nostalgia Trap

MAGA seems to suggest that there was a time when America was the shining beacon of greatness for everyone. But when you ask for specifics, it’s like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall.

Was it the 1950s with its quaint suburbs and black-and-white TVs? Or maybe the 1980s with neon colors and questionable fashion choices? It’s like picking your favorite flavor of ice cream, but instead, it’s your favorite era of America.

A History of Hiccups

Let’s face it: America’s history is about as smooth as a roller coaster with a few loose bolts. From the whole “Columbus discovering America” myth (while people were already living here) to that small issue known as slavery, there are quite a few blemishes on the American record.

It’s like saying your high school years were great while conveniently forgetting about that awkward phase where you wore braces and couldn’t talk properly.

The “Land of Opportunity” Myth

Ah, the American Dream, where anyone can rise from rags to riches with a little elbow grease and a sprinkle of luck. But as comedian George Carlin once quipped, “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.”

The gap between the rich and the rest has been growing wider than the Grand Canyon. If opportunity were a sandwich, some folks are getting the whole deli while others are left with a crust.
